Swimming is without a doubt a key skill for any child and something we try and do fairly often, with mixed results however the summer holidays seem like the ideal time to try and build some water confidents. I’ve never braved flying solo for a swimming trip but decided to give it ago for a parent and child session at Middleton Pool in Newport Pagnell.

My first thoughts on the session were that they were very simplistic for the £5.35 cost. They open the small pool bring out a crate with floats, balls and other water toys. Part way through the session they  rope of part of the adult pool which is ideal for the more confident swimmer. Within 10 minutes of being at the pool though I realised that the simple approach actually was perfect for us. Tinki isn’t very confident in the water and can be overwhealmed by the noise and over zealousness of older children when we have visited other pools. Without the distraction of wave machines or splashy fountains to get the water in his face Tinki was in his element he floated on a giant frog, let me pull him around on a swimming noodle and loved playing with the balls and watering cans.

The session was quite busy but never felt overcrowded as was spread out across the two pools, all the children played lovely sharing the toys and with the small pool only being 0.6 meters deep toddlers can walk across the pool without problems.

On the whole we were really happy with the session and will return but there are somethings to note. Firstly the water was pretty cold for little ones, as much as Tinki protested to the contrary, I could see it was cold enough to make him feel uncomfortable and stopped us from staying for the full hour session. Secondly the pool is currently undergoing some refurbishment which means the main changing rooms are unavailable. The changing in the communal section is fine but a little cramped. The main problem though is that the toilets are closed in the changing section so they are reduced to just one disabled toilet pool side. As much as this didn’t cause us any issues its not ideal with lots of little one about.

The work on the changing rooms is set to be finished by 8th September and I’m sure will make the pool even better but I do feel completing the works over the summer holidays when the pool is sure to be busy was probably not the best idea.
